About Me

My photo
I was in the workforce for over 40 years. I became an artist in 2008 to fill in a void in my retirement

This painting I did at home on a large piece of Masonite with timber supports four by two at the back. I called this painting "Animal Beach" it is a scene by the Beach. I put in two Palms trees, two Magpies, two Magpies heads, a house and dogs, a wooden fence, two Pelicans on medium size waves.

These two paintings were based on Magpies. The first painting I called "Birds eye view" it is a view of Sydney Harbour and I added two magpies. Magpies often appear in my paintings. The second painting is a scene of two Magpies with a baby, this one I called "Baby Sitting". I have developed a love for this beautiful bird and as well it is a Totem for the Wiradjuri tribe of which I am a decendent.

Friday 14 may 2010.

On Thursday 13 May the college was visited by ladies from Tiwi Islands. We were entertained by the dancing and singing and had the privilege of sharing morning tea with them. The ladies were shy and did not talk much (some men would say the perfect woman) but they really danced up a storm and showed off their skills as print makers on materials. I was very impressed with the colours and the materials were wrapped around the models bodies, the back drop of Bathurst Island is quite stunning.
Angel (Vicky) Ruhl, (she is a art student at Eora College) danced the Emu dance for the ladies and she was very good.

Eora College is a great place to come to learn many different skills. It is a very laid back place with nice teachers, who are very skilled and professional and very nice students. They provide courses in Aboriginal Studies, Basic Literacy & numeracy, Music, Year 10 equivalent, Theatre, Welfare and the Art Course which is made up of Painting, Ceramics, Print making course, Sculpture and Scratchback. A master class on Aboriginal studies and Aboriginal identity. I find this place a home away from home and enjoy the courses big time. I would recommend to anyone thinking of doing an education course to consider EORA College 333 Abercrombie Street, Chippendale 2008. The Art course is made up with Aboriginal and Torres Strait students only. The other courses are made up from mainly mainstream (I hate this statement}. Aboriginal students are accepted in a number of these courses and are learning many different skills. I know from personal experience that it is hard to find an education facility that offers so much and a great building and five minutes from Redfern Railway Station. I would recommend that any person looking for a reason to get out of the house and learning something at the same time and make new friends, should give this college a go.

2010

I have taken on some big projects in 2010 and wanted to outline my undertakings so far.

1. Ceramics-I am making a piece that starts with a solid base with a steel threaded rod
the base will be filled with cement to secure the rod. I have made three axe heads, a spearhead, bundie, a three pronged boomerang, four boomerangs. Each piece has a hole and once the piece is finished I have made different size partitions to seperate the pieces and make up the shaft of the spear. This structure came about from childhood memories. My uncles made all these artifacts and they always let me watch but never passed on the way they made things.

2. Art- I have painted a couple canvases. One has a yellow background with images of two Magpies, two Trees, two Emus, two full Goannas, four turtles, two snakes plus two pods from a tree. The yellow background projects the images almost in three D because the images are in darker colours on the lighter background. I have always loved the flower Orchids and I painted two canvases with the Orchid on a black background with the flower in the middle and the light colours with the black background projects an image that stands out like three D.

3. I painted Two small canvas with "Black and White Ball" this images has been a good find for me every year I have good sales with these images people like the concept.
